The tension Asher is carrying in his shoulders eases a little more the farther we get from Victory, and I can’t really blame him. Even before this shit storm hit, there was very little about the town I found intriguing, but the sinister side of Columbus somehow seeping into the west where there’s no real law to stop it has made everything seem twice as dark as the cloudy city we call home. In Columbus, we may have to look over our shoulders everywhere we go, but at least we understand the stakes. If we aren’t careful we get caught or shot, but out west there are no real rules, meaning anything can happen.

“I’ll be happy to have one night in our own bed,” I say.

The airship soars through the sky, cutting through clouds that become progressively thicker the closer we get to the more populated areas of the country. After less than two hours in the air, the sun is already almost completely blocked out.

Asher takes his eyes off the control panel long enough to look my way, and the smile he shoots me is familiar. More like the man I’ve come to know over the past year.

“I have to admit, when we first talked about going out west, I’d imagined spending a lot more time in our hotel room.”

I snort, but deep down I’m relieved to see a genuine smile on his face. “You mean the dusty hotel that’s hotter than an oven?”

“You can’t please some people,” he says, but his grin widens, and the sight of it nearly melts my heart.

The flight back is lighter than every moment we spent in Victory since meeting Pike, and not for the first time I find myself wishing we’d never heard of that cursed city. It takes a lot to make Columbus look good, but I have to admit, Victory has managed to accomplish that nearly impossible feat.

By the time the city comes into view, I’m ready to land and get things settled so Asher and I can spend a little time together that isn’t complicated by corruption and evil. There’s sure to be more pain over the next few days, but for the time being, he’s relaxed and smiling, and I want to embrace that. And him.

The buildings change from squat warehouses on the outskirts of the city to the taller, older neighborhoods that stood before the fall of technology. Here, most of the buildings are crumbling and barely livable, and the streets are riddled with garbage and pirates, something I know firsthand since we came here last year looking for Paget.

Soon, though, the nicer parts of Columbus come into view, along with the shimmering skyscrapers and their viewing screens. Pictures of fugitives flip across the screens, followed by ads for restaurants and stores, while below us on the streets cars speed through the city. Here and there, another airship is visible, cutting through the clouds with the same expertise Asher displays when he flies.

We reach the other side
